((dave courvoisier)) i'm dave courvoisier. supporters packed this mornings meeting, and brought along some hollywood star power. 8 news now anchor paul joncich was there for a rousing speech by actor mark ruffalo. ((paul joncich)) he may be best known for his role as the hulk on the avengers. but actor mark ruffalo is also a clean energy activist. and today he was a strong voice for nevadas solar industry. ((trk)) ((9:28:20 mark ruffalo/actor activist: "they're not taking our jobs today...they're not taking food out of our children's mouth today.")) ((paul joncich)) supporters of nevada's solar industry, including hundreds of laid off solar installers wanted to send a message to the p-u-c.

((paul joncich)) they want the p-u-c to reverse its decison to increase costs for residential solar panel users. that move angered thousands of customers who'd invested in solar, and prompted layoffs in what was a growing industry. and the accusations are mounting. ............................... ................. hour by horu forecast shows another chilly night with clouds. 40's mostly this evening but we'll be clearing. we'll pinpoing how cold it will get neighborhood by neighborhood coming up. we are learning new details in the arrest of a metro police officer... officer james burt is accused of domestic battery by strangulation and kidnapping. according to the police report... burt attacked his live in girlfriend monday evening. the report details a fight that had to do with her work sitaution... which escalated, and when the woman tried to leave and get her car out of the garage... she says burt broke the garage door opener, took her keys and yanked her out of the car and back into the house. she says he threw her on a couch and covered her mouth and nose, and she feared she might die. when she tried to leave again, she says he again attacked her and held her off the ground with his arm around her neck. the report also reveals a 20-11 arrest for domestic violence with similarities to monday's incident. burt has been with metro since 2005./// ((paula francis)) > the motorcyclist killed after crashing into an s-u-v last night... has been identified.

office identified him as 25-year-old adam shields of henderson. police say he rear-ended an s-u-v on lake mead parkway near industrial park. police do not think drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash... but speed could be. this is the first deadly crash year./// ((dave courvoisier)) > governor sandoval today kicked off the countdown to the final presidential debate... which will be held at u-n-l-v in october. that's just 3 weeks before the general election in november. ((paula francis)) but planning has been underway for months... and the university is helping get the community pumped up. patrick walker is live outside the thomas and mack center which is the home of the final debate. patrick? ((patrick walker)) you could say we're getting pretty good at this. we've already had two presidential primary elections... which have gone well. debate organizers say for las vegas... the third time will also be a charm.

she'll hold an event at the peppermill resaurant on the north end of the strip./// ((paula francis)) > a former pastor took the stand today in his own defense... against accusations he abused teenage girls. 8 news now's sharie johnson is live outisde the regional justice center... with more on what otis holland said in court today. ((sharie johnson)) cross- examination began less than an hour ago.... but a little earlier we heard from otis holland as he was questioned by his attorney. the former church pastor is accused of sexually assaulting girls in his congregation during counseling sessions. he has pleaded not guilty to 17 felonies including child sexual assault, lewdness, and conspiracy to destroy evidence. and today in court... he was very expressive when he talked about counseling the girls... saying that everyone in his congregation called on him all the time.

> maryland parkway... could soon be getting some upgrades. yesterday... area businesses made it known, they think the stretch of road is past prime. today... local developers met with representatives from unlv to discuss changes in the area. some of the proposed upgrades include a light rail that runs along maryland parkway... and added housing for students on campus./// ((dave courvoisier)) > thousands of nevada middle schoolers will soon be able to use new laptops in class. the state made a deal with a computer manufacturer this week. schools can apply for competitive grants.. that will be awarded in march... and teachers and principals will get training this spring on how to use the computers as teaching tools. if they win, the schools will get chromebooks with google's operating system. the idea is to teach students
